Genogram

How to draw a case's family with partnerships, children, relationships and characteristics, together in the appointment and between appointments once shared.

What it is about

A genogram shows a family across several generations: who belongs to whom, who is close to whom and where there are breaks. Every case has one genogram. You and a registered co-counsellor can open and change it at any time. The centre lead, the operator and the office do not see it.

A genogram across three generations: Crane with a double border, partner Lea, the children Mia and Ben, brother Tim, the parents Karl (deceased, alcohol) and Ingrid (needs care), plus conflict, cut off and closeness as coloured lines.

The room has a “Genogram” box. Click “Create genogram”.

The “Genogram” box in the room with “Create genogram” and the note that the client draws along in the appointment.

The genogram then fills the screen, and you start with the person it is about: woman, man or diverse and open. They are the index person and have a double border.

A new genogram: “Who do you start with?” with the buttons Woman, Man and Diverse or open.

Adding relatives

Tap a person. The buttons Partner, Child, Parents, Sibling, Relationship and Details appear at the bottom.

  1. Choose “Child”, for example, and then “Daughter”.
  2. The new person appears in the right place straight away, and the name field is open.
  3. Type the name and the year of birth. The age then shows inside the symbol.
Crane is selected and “Child” is open: together with Lea or without a partner, below that Daughter, Son and Child, diverse or open.

If a person has several partnerships, “Child” asks with whom. Under “Parents” you choose mother and father, two mothers, two fathers or one parent. Siblings hang from the parents. If the parents are missing, you add them first, and the genogram asks you to.

The genogram arranges the generations itself. If you drag a person sideways, you change the order within their generation. “Undo” and “Redo” take back your last steps.

Details and characteristics

“Details” holds the name, sex, year of birth, whether the person has died and a note. A first name or initials are enough as a name, a full name works too. People who have died have a cross in their symbol.

You choose characteristics in four groups: health, addiction, life situation and burdens. A dot on the symbol shows that there are characteristics, and the first ones appear under the name.

The details for Karl: male, born 1950, died 2019, alcohol selected under addiction.

If you tap a line, you set the partnership: married, together, separated or divorced, with years. For a child you choose biological, adopted or foster child. “Legend” explains the symbols and lines.

Relationships

Tap a person, then “Relationship” and then the second person. Choose the type: close, very close, distant, conflict, cut off, violence, dependent or control. For violence, dependence and control you set who it comes from. Green stands for closeness, red for what is burdensome.

The relationship between Crane and Karl: eight types with their line, conflict is selected.

In the appointment and between appointments

On the appointment page there is a “Genogram” tab next to the whiteboard, the systemic board and the cards. When you choose it, the client sees the genogram and draws along, and so do guests in the appointment. What you draw stays in the room, also after the appointment.

The whiteboard with the tabs Whiteboard, Systemic board, Position cards, Prompt cards and Genogram, the genogram is open.

Between appointments you switch on “Draw along between appointments too” in the “Genogram” box. The client then finds the genogram in their room and can keep working on it. You can switch it off at any time. The client sees everything in the genogram as soon as you share it. Your own thoughts belong in the documentation.

The “Genogram” box with “Draw along between appointments too” switched on.

History, export and deleting

After a break and after every appointment the genogram keeps a version. Under “More” and “View earlier versions” you bring one back. The current version stays in the history.

Under “More” you download the genogram as a PDF, an image or JSON. The file contains the names. Only store it where it is protected. Every export is logged. Nothing from the genogram goes to specialist software.

The genogram goes with the case, after your centre's deletion period. You can delete it straight away in the “Genogram” box with “Delete genogram”.
